How do I play?

Every case hides a code of colored pegs. Build a guess from the swatches in the drawer at the bottom of the file and tap Submit Guess. The row is logged and marked with pins that say how close you were. Read the rows, rule things out, and crack the code before you run out of attempts. Cases get harder as you go: Rookie is three pegs from five colors, Detective four from six, Senior five from eight, and on Cold Case colors can repeat.

What do the black and white pins mean?

A black pin with a green check means one peg is the right color in the right spot. A white pin means one peg is the right color in the wrong spot. The pins don't say which pegs; working that out is the game. The empty cells are the rest.

What is Symbols mode?

It draws a small symbol on every peg and swatch, so the colors can be told apart without color. Turn it on under Settings (the gear) → Pegs → Symbols on pegs. It is free, always, and changes nothing else about the game.

How do hints work?

Cookie Jones, the department's resident detective, offers four kinds of hint from the Hints button in the drawer: scratch a color, read the rows, suggest a guess, or reveal a slot. Each costs a hint or a few from your balance. You start with three, your first case is free, and you earn more by cracking a case at or under par, or by moving up a rank. There is no way to buy hints and nothing in the app to pay for.

What is "Check my guess"?

On Rookie cases, Cookie warns you automatically when a guess you're about to submit is already ruled out by a row you've logged, and walks you through which row and why, free. From Detective on, that check is the Check my guess button in the drawer and costs a hint, and the walkthrough of why costs one more; a careless guess is yours to make.

How do I start over?

Settings (the gear) → Progress → Reset progress… After two confirmations it erases every case on record, your hint balance and the case in progress, and the next case is No. 001, Rookie. Your settings stay. To abandon just the current case, use New Case in the drawer instead.

My case in progress vanished after an update. My history is still there. Why?

The app keeps two things separately: your record (cases solved, history, hint balance) and the one case you're in the middle of. The record is kept carefully across updates and carried forward. The half-played case is disposable: if an update changes how a case is saved, the app starts a fresh one rather than risk restoring it wrong. You lose a few minutes, never your record.

Does the app need an account, or the internet?

Neither. There is no account, no sign-in and no network use at all. Everything the app keeps stays on your phone; the privacy policy lists exactly what that is.
